Over the years, Shahid Kapoor’s made a few style errors: the mop-top hair, the popped collars, the T-shirts so tight they could’ve cut his blood supply. So how did he make it to the cover of GQ’s Best-Dressed List?

I used to think I had an amazing sense of style, but when I look back, I’d say that it was bad – like really bad. All the stuff you shouldn’t
be doing is what I thought was fashionable. I’d wear loud colours together. You know how you see some people on the road and think… “No”? I was one of them.
A lot has changed.
I didn’t have the exposure to understand what fashion was about. I saw what was around me and dressed like that. Fashion in movies 15 years ago wasn’t that great. I think we’ve started getting it right in the last few years.
Which designers excite you?
I like offbeat designers: Scotch & Soda, AllSaints, G-Star, Diesel jeans, Alexander McQueen, Givenchy. Rick Owens for shoes. I have about 30 pairs.
What’s your relationship with fashion?
I still don’t know if I’ve understood fashion entirely, but I’ve understood myself and what works for me and what doesn’t.
And what works for you?
I like understated style – black, grey and navy. I also like quirky, but I’m not an exhibitionist. I don’t want everyone to turn around and look at me. I still like to make a statement but I would rather be a tad under- than overplayed – it’s classier.
Your character Tommy Singh in Udta Punjab is the antithesis of underplayed.
Tommy Singh is this super-obnoxious pop star who’s also a massive addict – the next level of madness. I think he’s my alter ego. All the stuff I can’t do, I’ve let out through him.

Kapoor is 35. He looks 28. He blends experience and youth, sitting at the sweet spot between the establishment and the new generation. He’s confident, almost cocksure of what he wants; dismissing even top luxury labels if they’re not for him. But if you know fashion, you’ll notice him wearing Givenchy and McQueen – the kind of edgy labels that don’t bare any insignia on the sleeve. He prefers it like that. The fact is, style is an evolution and a reflection of who you are in the moment. And Kapoor’s never looked better.
